Book Club Meeting -- The Selected Adventures of T.S. Spivet -- October 12th The second meeting of the CCGB Book Club was another success, with eight members engaged in a wide-ranging discussion of Upton Sinclair's The Jungle. The group included three members there for the first time, and the total number of people who have signed on to the club is nearing the reasonable limit--so if you are interested in participating, be sure to contact Robert Garlan (RGarlan@earthlink.net) soon. Our gratitude goes out to September's host, attorney Steven Fox, who laid out a lovely appetizer spread, including sausage in celebration of this month's topic (or as a dare). Joyce Hwang will be leading the next discussion on Tuesday, October 12th, 2010 at 6:30. As the host of the next meeting, Joyce has chosen The Selected Adventures of T.S. Spivet, by Reif Larsen, after group members considered her suggested titles and leaned toward one that was light on oppression and poverty, powerful corporations, and political corruption. The blurb on the back quotes Stephen King as saying, "Here is a book that does the impossible: It combines Mark Twain, Thomas Pynchon, and Little Miss Sunshine. Good novels entertain; great ones come as a gift to the readers who are lucky enough to find them. This book is a treasure." |
